Methadone is a common perioperative analgesic rein cats and dogs with a variety of routes of administration. Methadone in combination with acepromazine provides greater sedation than the equivalent combination involving morphine or butorphanol. Methadone's depressive effect on the cardiovascular system is approximately twice as strong as morphine.
